Yellow Beeswax Pellets are unbleached beeswax (Cera flava) with a natural golden colour and a sweet honey aroma, formed into small pellets that melt quickly and measure easily. They are used to give structure and a protective, smooth texture to candles, lip balms, salves, balms, creams, lotions and wax melts. The pellets are yellow to golden yellow, and they have a two year shelf life.

What are yellow beeswax pellets and how are they made?

Honeybees build honeycomb from wax they secrete. After the honey is removed, the comb is melted, filtered to remove debris and formed into pellets. Nothing is bleached, so the wax keeps the colour and honey scent it picked up from the hive, which is why the shade can vary slightly from batch to batch, from pale yellow to deep gold. Yellow beeswax is described in the European Pharmacopoeia, and the US Pharmacopeia lists it as yellow wax, so formulators will find it a familiar, well-documented ingredient.

Beeswax is a natural mixture rather than a single compound. Our specification lists myricyl palmitate at about 35 percent, hydrocarbons such as hentriacontane at about 14 percent, and free fatty acids, mainly cerotic and palmitic acid, at 12 to 14 percent, along with oleic acid and fatty alcohols. This mix gives beeswax its firmness, its slight tackiness and its ability to bind oils into a stable, spreadable structure.

What is the difference between yellow and white beeswax?

Yellow beeswax is the raw, filtered wax, with its natural golden colour and warm honey aroma. Our white beeswax pellets are the same wax that has been refined and bleached to a pale colour with a milder scent. They behave almost identically in a formulation, so the choice is mainly about appearance and aroma. Choose yellow beeswax when you want a natural golden colour, a honey scent and an unbleached ingredient. Choose white beeswax when you want pale candles, accurate colour work with dyes and pigments, or a neutral scent.

How do you use yellow beeswax pellets in candle making?

Beeswax burns slowly and cleanly, and the finished candle has a soft golden colour and a gentle honey scent. It can be used alone or blended with other waxes, and you can compare it with soy, paraffin and blends in our candle waxes collection. Melt the pellets in a double boiler, never over a direct flame, because hot wax is flammable and can cause burns. Beeswax melts at about 62 to 64°C and is denser than most candle waxes, so use a larger wick than you would for soy, and test a small batch first. Its natural honey scent is strong enough that many makers use it unscented, or add candle fragrances sparingly. A fine white bloom on the surface of a beeswax candle is natural and harmless. How do you use yellow beeswax pellets in lip balms, salves and creams?

Beeswax thickens oils and butters into a solid or semi-solid texture, and it forms a protective layer on the skin that helps hold moisture in. For a lip balm, a common starting point is around 25 to 30 percent beeswax by weight, with the rest made up of carrier oils and butters. Use less for softer salves and creams, and more for firmer balms and deodorant sticks. Yellow beeswax pairs well with shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, castor oil and olive oil, and it works well alongside body butters. Melt the beeswax together with the oils, stir well and pour while liquid. Its golden tint and honey scent carry through into the finished product.

What are the specifications of yellow beeswax pellets?

The botanical name is Apis mellifera L. (Cera flava), the CAS number is 8006-40-4 and the FEMA number is 2126. The wax has a specific gravity of 0.962 at 15°C, a relative density of 0.958 to 0.970 at 15°C, a refractive index of 1.443 to 1.449 at 75°C, a flash point of 204.4°C, an acid value of 18 to 24 mg KOH/g and moisture content of up to 0.1 percent. It is a hard, waxy solid at room temperature that becomes pliable at about 35°C. The colour is yellow to golden yellow, with a sweet, characteristic honey-like aroma. The shelf life is two years, and the wax is insoluble in water, soluble in fixed oils, chloroform and ether, and partially soluble in cold alcohol.

How should you store yellow beeswax pellets?

Keep the pellets in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight, so they do not clump or absorb odours. Keep them away from strong-smelling materials, because wax takes up scents easily. Stored well, the pellets keep their quality for the full two year shelf life.

Is yellow beeswax safe to use?

Yellow beeswax pellets are for external cosmetic and craft use. Hot wax can cause burns, so melt it carefully in a double boiler, keep it away from flames and never leave it unattended. If you have an allergy to bee products, do a patch test before using finished products. Keep the pellets away from children, and use a thermometer when melting. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
